Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center Website Case Study

Challenge

Orlando's new $400 million performing arts center needed a website as powerful as it was beautiful and reflected the experience patrons enjoy at the facility. The challenge was to find a robust platform that had the features, functionality, and ease-of-use to enable their team to manage their website and scale on-demand.

The in-house team needed the ability to manage all website content including inventory, marketing, and ticket sales from a single platform. As a performing arts center with high peaks in traffic, the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center (DPAC) required a scalable, flexible, and secure platform to serve as the foundation of their online presence.

Solution

A secure, scalable, and reliable technological infrastructure was critical and Amazon Web Services (AWS) provided an ideal foundation for DPAC. By leveraging the AWS Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Solodev was able to quickly auto-scale capacity up and down as DPAC's computing requirements changed. AWS replicates applications and data across multiple data centers in various regions using Availability Zones, further securing DPAC’s Website by increasing redundancy and fault tolerance by replicating data between geographic regions.

Solodev employed AWS OpsWorks, a configuration management service that allows DPAC to configure and operate applications, to define the application’s architecture as well as the specification of each component including package installation, software configuration and resources such as storage.

Additionally, AWS OpsWorks includes automation to scale the performing arts center’s applications based on time or load as well as dynamic configuration to orchestrate changes as traffic surges occur. OpsWorks also allows DPAC to schedule the allocation of their applications by adding servers prior to the sale of tickets for upcoming show releases.

Results

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts is the sparkling centerpiece of the Orlando arts scene and a pillar of downtown living. The Center’s website built on the Solodev platform is an interactive digital expression of the immersive experience patrons enjoy while attending a performance.

Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center technological infrastructure built on top of Amazon Web Services allows their website to auto-scale resources during surges in traffic and auto-scale down to normally required levels of traffic. This was all made possible by Solodev’s design of the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center infrastructure on AWS, which offers full disaster recovery, and easy scalability to 100,000 concurrent users by leveraging the Amazon Content Delivery Network (CDN). As a result, Dr. Phillips is able to provide a more reliable experience to its visitors but more importantly can do so at significantly reduced infrastructure costs by only utilizing the environment that is required on an hourly basis.
