A Blog on Blogs

March 15, 2010 - 1:00 AM

Last week's episode of House showcased a woman who blogged about every second of her life. Because of her open and honest assessment of her life, she had people across the globe reading her every word.

While fiction, the episode showcased a powerful truth about blogs – done on a regular basis and with an interesting style, your words and your expertise can reach new people that would be impossible to communicate with in any other format.

While I wouldn’t advocate posting everything your company does in an on-line forum, it’s important to keep the following things in mind:

  • Be regular. If your blogging is inconsistent or sporadic, any reader who might have come upon your blog will be chased off.
  • Be honest. People reading will be able to read through insincerity in a minute.
  • Be helpful. Company blogs should not be a working advertisement for your company. People skip through commercials on a DVR for a reason.
  • Be brief. A blog should get to the point and not be too long. Most people do not want to read a doctorial thesis on your subject.
  • Be on message. Don’t blog about things you wouldn’t want your mother to read – or on something that would chase away customers.
  • Encourage communication. Blogging works best when it is a two-way street.

Next time, we’ll discuss ways to get your blog read!
